At last, at last I feel better! It’s been a quiet weekend between Leo being sick and one of our vans being out of commission so Ernie’s been busy working on it. I actually have felt like cooking! I made a wonderful chicken stew last night and brought some to my parents this morning. I based it on a ‘rustic duck stew’ from a Union Square Cafe cookbook. Almost like a chicken cacciatore but with black olives instead of mushrooms and things like balsalmic vinigar and anchovies that you can’ t pin down when you taste it—but make an incredibly flavored broth. Now I’m doing a six hour roast pork and I might make a red lentil asian flavored soup too.
It’s so nice to have it be fall and be soup weather—it’s an easy way to cook for my parents. Took my Dad to church today. We sat in the front pew so he could hear but of course the problem is that I have no one in front of me to follow in the stand up, sit down maneuvers…. When I get to their house in the morning sometimes I just think oh, this has to stop—they can’t live on their own…..but by the time we get home from church and shopping and I sit for awhile…then I start thinking, well I guess they’re o.k. for a little while longer….
Poor Harlan is still staying in the basement most of the time. Poor guy. Hattie and Dee Dee (we’re still having some name controversies. The boys want to name him Bob. I can’t make up my mind…) seem happy as clams…
One more day of antibiotics–yay! It will be interesting to see if my mother and Owen have my parasite. The boys were fascinated that we have to test Owen’s poop. It’s nice we can impress somebody… So one more day of antibiotics and then anywhere from 24-72 hours later I can finally have a glass of wine. They say it can make me very, very sick if I don’t wait for the antibiotic to be out of my system so I’ll be patient….but it sure seems like a good day for a glass of red wine….
Oh, I would love the chicken stew recipe; it sounds fabulous. Well, and the six-hour pork and the Asian lentil soup…maybe you should start a food blog?!
I’m not familiar with the Union Square restaurant/cookbook, will have to check it out.

I’ve had that cookbook for ages but for some reason never cook from it. Everytime I go through it though I wonder why I haven’t! So this is the first thing I’ve made from it and it was really wonderful. I think I’ll try the lentil soup tonight as I didn’t get to it this weekend….
