Stephanie at About The Girl tagged me for a meme…..here goes:
Four jobs I’ve had:
-My first job was in an antique shop
-I trimmed hemispheres at a globe factory…you had to work your way up to putting on the equators but I didn’t last that long
-I traveled around the midwest looking for a drive-in movie theatre sign for the Henry Ford Museum
-I worked for the Chicago Architecture Foundation. The job had its ups and downs to say the least but the best part was that my office was in the Glessner House. It was in the lower level and huge, the windows were those two stone grates that are on the bottom right of the facade.
Four movies I could watch over and over:
hmmmm, I’m not the biggest movie watcher
-The Awful Truth. I love Cary Grant and Irene Dunne in this movie.
-Polar Express. I DO watch this movie over and over and over and I actually find it quite soothing. I never get tired of when they first pull into the north pole….
-Hannah and Her Sisters. Ernie and I watch this every year at Thanksgiving time. It’s become a holiday tradition for us. I still want to know who the band is that is playing when Woody Allen dates Dianne Wiest for the first time.
-Miracle on 34th Street (1947 version). I know, I know, that’s two holiday movies–actually three if you count Thanksgiving–but that’s just the kind of girl I am. I think Edmund Gwenn’s face is SO beautiful in this.
Four places I’ve lived:
I’m definitely a midwestern girl…
-Lisle, Illinois
-Ypsilanti, Michigan
-Chicago, Illinois
-good old Champaign-Urbana
Four TV shows I love to watch:
-Gilmore Girls. Tuesday at 7:00 is a sacred hour at our house when Mommy gets to watch her show. The other day Owen trying to suck up to me and he said, “Mommy, wouldn’t it be great if your Lorelei show were on all the time?”
-Anthony Bourdains’ No Reservations
-whatever reality show I’m hooked on: right now Top Chef, previously Project Runway, oh and Nashville Star starts tonight….hehehe….of course my favorite was the Rock Star ones (INXS and Supernova).
-nothing else specific—not that I don’t watch tv—there’s nothing better than a block of cooking and gardening shows, a bowl of popcorn and a glass of wine….
Four places you’ve been on vacation:
Oh, I’m really pretty poorly traveled…..
-Maine-one of my favorite places to be
-New Orleans
-a road trip from Utah to Texas and back up old route 66 to Chicago
-Miami Beach—when we won a trip their courtesy the Mavericks
Four websites you visit daily:
-Salon
-Go Fug Yourself
-New York Times
-Google News
Four favorite foods:
-popcorn
-potstickers
-slow roasted/barbecued pork…or a perfect roast chicken….or chicken wings….I do have a soft spot for chicken wings….
-home grown tomatos (thank you Guy Clark)—preferably a Brandywine
Four places I’d like to visit
-London, the British Isles in general actually
-Greece….Ernie lived in Greece, on the island of Crete, when he was young and we’ve long talked about going together. For awhile the plan was that he’d take me for my 40th birthday but I found myself with a six month old baby when that happened…..
-Puerto Rico—particularly to see my dear friend Gisela
-old highways across this country. I love old roads and roadside architecture. It’s been too long since Ernie and I have just followed an old road looking for bits of the past. I’d really like to do that.
Four people I tag to do this list (if any of them will do it):
Eileen
Kathleen J
If you don’t have your own blog guys—then you can just put it in the comments section……
I’m in. I owe someone else a meme, too. So I’ll do yours tomorrow and hers on Sunday.
Glad to hear your zen attitude about your folks. It can’t be easy. I know it isn’t easy, actually. You are a strong woman, friend.
Four jobs I’ve had:
First job was a summer paper route. I probably only had to deliver about 30 papers at most. I bought a suede “hippie” purse with my earnings.
During undergrad years, I worked one summer on second shift in a factory that made electrical units for refrigerators and air conditioners. It was hot and there was potential to mash your fingers in the machinery. I HATED that job.
Between college and grad school I was a supervisor for the US Census in my home county. That was fun and paid well. Don’t know that I would want to do it now as knocking on strange doors probably isn’t as safe as it used to be.
Finally, my current job. The job to end all jobs. The job that ended my sanity. Registrar at the Krannert Art Museum. There are too many stories and too many characters to tell about. Anyway, the stories would be unbelievable to anyone who hasn’t worked here.
Four movies I could watch over and over:
Love Actually, not only for my obvious devotion to Hugh Grant but because it is a grand film that gives one hope.
Baby Boom, the idea of escaping to that wreck of a house in Vermont, and just puttering around, has sucked me in every time it has been on tv.
People Will Talk, another great Carrie Grant film with Jean Crane, in which he marries an unwed mother. They are both witty and handsome in their roles.
Scrooge with Albert Finney. My Christmas “much watch” movie which I missed this year. Further explanation of why this Christmas was such a dud.
Four places I’ve lived:
We moved a lot with my dad’s construction jobs until I entered high school. In between each move we lived in St. Francisville, IL population 1000.
Florida, Pensacola and later Homestead. I learned to count with a southern accent.
Chalmet Louisiana, We lived there through Mardi Gras and took part in lots of the local festivities. We used mardi gras beads on our Christmas trees.
Wilmington, Delaware and Lyndon, New Jersey, I had an imaginary friend, got two black eyes in succession on the swing set, and remember how good the sub sandwiches were.
Benedict, Maryland where we lived on a point in the Patuxent River. There was a casino and swimming beach near our house. We had a dock in our back yard and mallard ducks that we fed. One winter we skated on the river.
Four TV shows I love to watch:
I will watch anything on BBC America even if I don’t like the program. It’s on all the time when I am at home. And yet, I can’t think of a favorite program on BBC. Maybe Changing Rooms, just because I have a crush on Laurence Llewellyn Bowen. I must like men with floppy hair.
The Office, American or British version.
Midsommer Murders
America’s Next Top Model/American Idol/Project Runway for the model/celebrity in me.
Four places you’ve been on vacation:
We kind of lived our vacations with all of the traveling:
New York City, Washington DC, Wilmington DE. We were tourists everywhere we lived. We stopped in California at Disneyland for a day. Dad wouldn’t let me go in the Swiss Family Robinson Tree House because some hippies were in line in front of us. The man had a shoulder bag and the woman wasn’t wearing a bra, I remember him saying “damn hippies” and jerking me out of the line.
We took one actual family vacation to Florida when I was in high school. Rented a little cottage and met old friends who were down there. I mainly remember drinking Coke and how good it was.
Went camping in Canada with my boyfriend in the 80’s. Lots of mixed feelings about that trip. He made me buy hiking boots and I developed blisters that were comparable in area to the great lakes we were encompassing. I took electric curlers with me just in case we had access to electricity. I guess I’m not truly an outdoor woman.
Went to Graceland with some friends in the 90’s. That was a nice trip because it was already springtime in Memphis. We attempted to channel Elvis in our hotel room but were unsuccessful.
Four websites you visit (almost) daily:
Ebay where I am trying to find cheap pink luster ware. I got a nice tea bowl for myself at Christmas.
Dogster.com where my dogs Fern and Parker have lackluster web pages. http://www.dogster.com/pet_page.php?j=t&i=419763
Hellomagazine.com To stay in touch with the hair trends of my favorite British celebrities.
My bank/Main Street Trust, to keep track of my miniscule account balance.
Four favorite foods (currently):
General Tsao’s tofu=salt
Kalamata olives=salt
Lays potato chips=salt
Coca Cola/not truly a food but an addiction that I can’t shake=quenched thirst
Four places I’d like to visit
England especially the rural areas. England could suffice for all four responses.
The UP of Michigan where my friend Jennifer lives.
New England, have never been there and would love to go antiquing.
I’ve always wanted to take a Thelma and Louise style drive in a convertible through the southwest, eating at truckstops and diners and sleeping in vintage motels with no particular destination in mind. I would probably just fry in that much sun and would cut the trip short.
The band from “Hannah and Her Sisters,” I believe, is called The 39 Steps. If you go here — http://www.awesomefilm.com/script/hannah.html — and search the text for “39 Steps” you’ll see a reference to them in the script at the point where Mickey and Holly meet. According to this page — http://jam.canoe.ca/Music/Pop_Encyclopedia/T/39_Steps.html — the song is called “Slip Into The Crowd” and was released on their RCA album of the same name.
This is why I’m a librarian…
oh my god Kurt—I love you!!!
