Random Notes from the Sandwich Life

1.  Owen wants to send a letter to Adam Schmitt telling him how wonderful he thinks he is.  He wants to wrap it in Christmas wrapping paper and include a cd with some songs for him.  First he wanted to include Adam Schmitt songs on it, specifically ‘Speed Kills.’  I told him he probably already had that but he said he could keep it in case his copy breaks.  Thoughtful little guy. Then he thought maybe he’d include one of his own songs.  Ernie is worried that Adam may find this a little creepy and feel as though he’s being stalked by a five year old.  What do you think?  Should I discourage/encourage Owen?
2.  Nice three day weekend—-breaks my heart that there’s not another one until May….
3.  Did some antiquing yesterday at a so-so antique mall.  The boys were beside themselves with excitement—-Leo got a Lionel flat car and Owen got a $4 Spiderman car. We actually got a couple of nice early things.  The boys were angels and asked if they could go back some time!  Maybe our days of babysitters for antiquing are over!  Well, probably not totally, but I was really happy with how good they were and how much fun we had.  The only downside is that I have a feeling we’re going to be investing quite a bit into Lionel in the future….
4.  Church went pretty well with my father.  It’s hard for him as when he goes to mass all he thinks about are his lost comrades in WWII.  He often tells me that it gets harder every week.  All the men on his LST’s sistership were lost and he prays for them.  After church at coffee in the parish hall he told me how worried he is that no one else is left to pray for them.  I told him that after he was gone that I would pray for  the men and he broke down and cried.  If anyone wonders what war can do to a soul they should spend some time with my father.  He thinks he won’t go to heaven because of what he did in WWII and the war in Iraq breaks his heart because he worries so, not just for those that won’t come back, but for those that will.
5.  Took Mom to the doctor yesterday with a bit of trepidation as last time I did she ended up in the hospital.  Things looked good though and she is feeling less tired.  It’s a bit scary leaving my father alone in the house—-I was so relieved when my mother went in the door first and I heard her say hello to him…..
6.  Owen has taken to trotting up the stairs yelling over his shoulder, "if you need me, I’ll be rocking out in my room."  And so he does.  The other day Leo was just trying to be difficult (shocking, I know) and he told Owen there was no such thing as rock and roll.  Glad I wasn’t there to see Owen’s outrage…..Ernie seemed highly offended too….

  1. One time I was at a party in Schwenkwater, Illinois and Adam was a no-show. So (while Paul Chastain and John Richardson snickered nearby) I called his house and said, “Adam, pick up your damn phone. I’m on the porch, Adam. I can SEE you in there. Come on, pick up your phone or answer the door.”
…a few minutes later my phone rang…
[pause] “You are NOT on my porch.”
    So, go for it, Owen!
