I was in Chicago yesterday for a meeting and I feel as though I was gone for a week. Had a marvelous lunch (black cod on a bed of shiitake mushrooms with a puree of French green lentils in a ginger lemongross broth with baby bok choy) at the University Club in this dining room:
Not my usual stomping grounds. Then a quick visit to the Art Institute:
Meanwhile, Ernie was getting both boys to their respective schools, racing over to my parents to take my mother to her doctor’s appointment. Then getting her home and taking my father to have his hearing aid looked at. Then sitting in the waiting room with my father sans hearing aid while my father started on various war stories. Then tensing up and praying when my father started talking about his captain that he wasn’t going to tell the story about the captain drinking the medical alcohol and masturbating. Then relaxing a tiny bit when it was a different story. Then trying to explain to Dad the various repair options for his hearing aid to him when of course he couldn’t hear a thing. Then getting Dad back, explaining everything to Mom, getting both boys from school, going to a party for his sister in law, then tearing the boys (particularly Owen) away from the video games and picking me up from the train station.
I think I need to do something nice for him.
Anytime your dad wants an audience for the captain masturbating story–I’m all ears.
Ernie is a marvelous husband. You are very lucky.

Ditto on the Captain story.
I really want to hear it.
Can you post an audio clip of this? It sounds fantastic and worthy of documentation (oral history, so to speak). Also – we should get together when you come to Chicago!
