Random Notes from the Sandwich Life

1. May is always a bad month for garter snakes.  And YES I know they're harmless. It doesn't seem to matter to my inner psyche. Sigh.

2. Last night Ernie and Owen and I sat on our front porch and watched the moon. We talked about life and watched a big slug move across the sidewalk and wondered where he was going and why he was going so fast (for a slug). The big questions.

3. Thanks to Van for recording this song by Audrey Auld from our house concert!

4. I'm missing the first Farmers' Market because Ernie's at Vintage Vinyl. I guess I can hold out til next week.

5. Last night for dinner I couldn't decide what to make. I ended up carmelized a couple of onions (and kudos to Sasha for pointing out this brilliant article) and toasting some spices (turmeric, curry powder, cumin, coriander, red pepper flakes) and garlic and then dumping that all in the rice cooker with some brown rice. It was pretty good and then I realized I had created Indian flavored Rice A Roni. Huh.

6. I'm pondering what to make for food for the Rod Picott house concert. Any ideas? I'm feeling distinctly uninspired of late and obsessing over recipes usually cheers me up. Recommendations please!

  1. PLEASE give me an update on Ernie’s trip to Vintage Vinyl!!
    Nothing else matters. NOTHING. 😉

  2. Speaking of Audrey, earlier in the week she posted something about a ‘black bean and sweet potato chili’ that sounded really good to me. I’m sure she’d be glad to give you the recipe. And I’d bet good money that Rod would like it.
I love Sandwich Life House Concerts! Great friends, great food and GREAT music!

  3. Growing up next to farms, we had plenty of contact with garter snakes. Yes, they’re completely harmless, but opening a cupboard, expecting to find nestle’s quick, and finding a garter snake instead, will get your heart going.
    Beautiful song.

  4. When I was a little girl, I had a garter snake for a pet; I named him Chipper. I loved him dearly, but I had to say goodbye after he got out of his glass aquarium. My mother said it was non-negotiable.

  5. If you’re looking for a meat dish, I have a wonderful honey/curry chicken recipe – I make it with boneless skinless thighs that I cut in half, perfect for potlucks and doesn’t need to be hot.

  6. Honey-Baked Chicken
8 skinless boneless chicken thighs, halved
    1/3 C. melted butter
    1/3 C. honey
2 Tbl. mustard – I use djon usually
    1 tsp. salt
1 Tbl. curry (recipe calls for 1 tsp. but that’s not enough!)
Arrange chicken in a single layer in a greased baking pan. Mix all the sauce ingred. together and poor over chicken. Bake at 350 for an hour or so, basting every 15 min.
It’s easy to increase the sauce for a big pan full. Great all alone for potluck or with cous cous (I add raisins or peas and garlic) as a meal.
