Sandwich Life Memories: Conversations in August 2007

While I'm on vacation I am reposting some old posts. Some because I find them amusing and some because I like to look back and realize how my life has changed since I started this blog six years ago.

Woman from adult daycare:  Your father is a bit agitated and doesn't understand why he's here….do you want to talk to him?

ME:  uhhh, sure

DAD:  Cindy—I want you to call the police.  I'm being held here.

ME:  Dad, you're not being held there—-they'll be bringing you home in a couple of hours….

Dad:  These are criminal actions….

(more back and forth between me and Dad and me and the daycare person)

ME:  Dad, I have to take Mom to the doctor…..

Dad:  O.K., take your mother to the doctor and THEN call the police…

It's nice to know that after 55 years he still loves her so much that he wants her taken care of  before we call the police to rescue him….

As we were driving the other day:

Leo:  How long is college?

Me:  It's usually four years…but it depends….I went six years and Aunt Judi went even longer. (I then blathered on with more information than he needed)

Leo:  Well, I'm NOT going to college.

Me (feeling stressed out and irritable and therefore not particularly reasonable given that I'm talking to a 7 year old about his college plans):  Well Leo, in this family we go to college.

Leo:  NEVER

Me:  College is fun you guys….you move out and get to live with friends and do all sorts of fun things….

Owen (face crumpling as he dissolves in tears):  but I DON"T WANT to move out…..

ME:  don't worry Owen—just get through kindergarten first

Owen: (more sobs)

Ernie to me:  you have to be careful—he's nervous about school

Leo:  NEVER

Me:  I'M NOT THE ONE who brought up college

Owen:  I want to stay at  home…..

Ernie then mercifully bellowed:  O.K. why don't we ALL stop talking for awhile

we drove on in silence…..

Doesn't this make you wonder why we even have conversations? Even those conversations that seem to make sense are full of contradictions, misunderstandings….but seldom are they as humorous as your conversations! Love you!

Aunt Judi (who could not figure out that you don't have to go college for so many years…..)

Again, I must side with the boys…I didn't want to go to college, either. My boss just told me he wants to try to eventually designate my job as an academic professional position, but I still don't want to go to college. I certainly don't want to move out AGAIN.

You know, Adam Schmitt never went to college.

(Now are you not relieved we don't get together more often)

I could never be happy we don't see you more often Don….but I have a feeling that you will ALWAYS side with the boys….(possibly rightfully so of course….)

My goodness — when my mom went into the nursing home, we had an almost word-for-word conversation. She told me to call the police right away — that they were holding her there against her will, and that the nursing home staff were killing off the patients, one by one. It was SO awful…
