I called home on Saturday morning when I first woke…to check on all my boys. Owen answered the phone and I asked him how their evening was. He said, "It was good. We had some of that leftover chicken, but we warmed it up, and some corn on the cob. And then we watched a couple of Family Guys (that we don't usually allow the boys to watch) just because we were in the mood." I told him that all sounded good, even the Family Guys. Then I asked if I could speak to his father. Ernie got on the phone and I asked him the same question. He said, "It was good. We had some of that leftover chicken, but we warmed it up, and some corn on the cob. And then we watched a couple of Family Guys just because we were in the mood." I kid you not….IDENTICAL conversations. Now I know it was pretty straightforward information but REALLY?
I looked at this video and thought, "gee, the person who did this must have been sitting close to us" and then I realized that the bobbing head at the bottom left is me.
We left the Ian Hunter show positively giddy. I made Ernie buy a t-shirt on the way out. All they had left was small and XXL so he blithely bought the XXL. I can hardly ever convince him to buy a t-shirt, much less one too big for him. The power of Ian.
I hazily remembered that we could take Lake over to Wacker and onto Lake Shore Drive. It was cool and beautiful as we sped north. It was such an odd feeling. Part of me felt like this was perfectly normal and we were merely heading back to our apartment….one of those moments when memories and the present collide. We headed into Van and Karin's beautiful apartment to find that they had straightened up even more and left a note on the bed saying we should move to the bigger bed…and to ensure it they not only left a note but took the sheets off that bed. They're good. In the kitchen there was all sorts of food leftover from the party and wine. We nibbled a bit and poured a drink before going into the living room. I laid down on the floor on my back and stared at the ceiling. Ernie asked me why and I said, "I don't know, I just want to think about the show." He asked me if I did this often and I told him I didn't think I ever had….but it seemed the right thing to do. We laid/sat there for awhile and then admitted we were exhausted and tumbled into bed.
The next morning, after taking Van and Karin out to breakfast, we reluctantly packed up our things and headed back to our sweet peas. Got the official Van stoop portrait before we left….and went home loaded with leftovers from the house concert (LOVED that wheatberry salad…oh, and Van's cookies…my favorite cookies ever).
As much as I wasn't really ready to leave it felt good to go home. We played Ian Hunter and Kevin Gordon loud as we drove south. The day was stunning, with the colors just starting to show. Here and there you could see farmers out harvesting. There is something so powerful about the image of a combine in a cornfield but we didn't take the time to stop and take pictures.
It felt wonderful to hug my babies and listen to their accounts of the time we were gone. Later I commented to Leo that it felt good to be home and he calmly responded, "that's because there's never anyplace as good as home." I told him I agreed and then he showed me some new texture packs he got for Minecraft. Owen convinced Ernie to take him to the hardware store where he purchased a gigantic length of PVC pipe that he needs for some project and some twine. He then covered the twine with glue from his glue gun so it would look like Spiderman's web. And it really did feel good to be home.
Rod’s bed will be Rod’s bed until Amelia White or Jon Byrd or Phil Lee sleeps in it.
oh good God…I think that means Ernie and I dont count lol!!!! So Im just a girl that slept in Rods bed. Huh.
Actually the back bedroom is known as Lori’s bedroom. Lori is Karin’s youngest sister. So maybe we can call the big bedroom the “Cynthia and Ernie” room, and just change the name of the bed when needed.
But maybe I’m just being silly.
ha! I like you silly…dont worry.
You’re right about the sight of those awesome combines. We saw them in western Ohio a year ago under a full moon. I’ll never forget it.
I recognize the signs at the corner of Granville and Broadway. I lived just a few blocks away during college.
