I woke up early, early, early and couldn't sleep. I tossed and turned…couldn't get Ian Hunter's When I'm President out of my head. I finally started to relax a bit and then I heard a rumble of thunder. It was just what I needed somehow and I happily drifted off.

When the storm really hit of course I woke up again. There was lightning and a vicious clap of thunder. I nudged Ernie and said, "do  you think Owen's o.k?" He mumbled. I dozed off again. Another clap of thunder and once again I fussed about Owen. Then Ernie told me Owen had just gotten up and gone into the bathroom. When he came out I called him and he came in our room. I asked him if he was o.k. and he said, "Oh yeah, I'm not afraid. When I see the lightning I just cover my ears." I looked at Ernie in amazement. I asked Owen if he wanted to get into bed to snuggle and he politely declined, saying, "It's 5:00 Mom, I'm going to go downstairs."

My baby….not afraid of thunderstorms? When the hell did that happen?

Ernie was getting up too. I asked if Leo was awake and Owen said he'd go check. He came back a minute later with Leo and sang, "I've got someone here for you Mom." I told Leo to come and talk to me. I gave him a hug and I smelled his sleepiness. I told him Owen wasn't scared of storms anymore, that our baby was growing up. He giggled a little. I said I suppose you want to go downstairs too and he said no, that it was too early and he wanted to sleep more. I was thrilled so we both snuggled  back into the bed and slept. When Ernie came to wake Leo he woke me  by mistake…said he couldn't tell our two dark heads apart. It was the perfect way to start the day.
