Voting, Perspective, and Popcorn

It was not a particularly great day but at the very end of it, Ernie and Leo and I headed off to vote. Watching Leo get his ballot and seeing him go into the voting booth made me so happy and proud. Kirsten and Jim and James came in as we were there. All of us with our 18 year olds voting for the first time! As Ernie and I stood, waiting for Leo to finish, Ernie peeled his 'I Voted' sticker off the backing and put it on his shirt. He said, "You know Leo's not going to want to do that," and I said, "He damn well better." But when Leo joined us, holding his sticker, Ernie told him he had to put it on, and Leo said, with that sometimes crooked smile of his, "Well, of course, it's the best part," and slapped it right on his Pendulum hoodie. I made them stand in front of the entrance so I could take a picture. A couple came out and looked surprised at me standing there with my phone. I laughed and pointed to Leo, saying  "first time voting"  They laughed then too and the man reached out and shook Leo's hand. When we got home and got out of the car I told him how proud my parents would have been of him, and he gave me that warm, sweet smile of his. Life really is good. It's all a matter of perspective. And then we got into the house and Ernie had bought me the giant bag of popcorn from GFS that I had admired last time. I laughed, and laughed, and laughed.
