Damn. That week seemed to fly by…not sure why, but it did.
Thursday, Leo had a computer meltdown…his old iMac which we got for him when he started high school…it's the one that has all his data…all his work. That night we had Dennis over for dinner. We did a test run for a house concert….maple mustard pork shoulder. I think it might be a go, although I'll probably play around with it a bit. Anyway…we had a lovely time. Here are some fuzzy pictures.
boys and an uncle
two sets of brothers….love my camera technique!
I served the pork with mashed potatoes and braised napa cabbage. The cabbage was so good and so simple…just braised in a bit of olive oil, butter, and water, with a sprinkle of salt and red pepper flakes. It was so good the leftovers made a perfect breakfast the next day.
The nasturtiums LOVE September as much as I love them.
My picture's not great…but raindrops on nasturtium leaves bring me great joy.
Late September light.
We picked up some scallops at Schnuck's instead of our regular Aldi's. They were called queen scallops, which I'd never heard of. They're somewhere in between sea scallops and bay scallops in terms of size. These were from the Faroe Islands, but when I read about them it said they are sometimes called Manx because they're common around the Island of Man. CAT SCALLOPS! I enjoyed them in honor of Bob and Hattie, although I think I like my regular scallops a bit better.
I'm not sure what I'm doing this weekend…have no plans. I've got some work to do but also have some free time. Owen's off to see Mac DeMarco at the Riviera tonight. I will worry until he's home. Leo…ohhhh, wait. I didn't tell you about Leo! So…remember I told you Leo had a computer meltdown. Well, the next day who shows up with a new 27" iMac? Yup. Dennis. The boys truly hit the jackpot with their uncles. We demurred but he insisted. I KNOW! I feel a bit guilty but am thrilled for Leo. Dennis has the biggest heart. We left the computer sitting in front of Leo's desk. When Leo came home from work we didn't say anything, just chatted about our days and let him go on upstairs. We sat and quietly giggled…waiting…it was quiet for a very long time. Finally, we heard him come out of his room and he called downstairs in a somewhat bewildered voice, "Did Uncle Dennis buy me a computer?" "YES," we shouted, laughing. Leo is over the moon. He called Dennis to thank him and then of course immediately posted the news to his chat groups. I know, we are ridiculously fortunate.
Just now, Ernie asked me if I was blogging. I nodded yes and he said he thought so because I had that relaxed look I get when I blog. That struck me so. I do kind of go into a quiet space when I write. Even when I am just writing meaningless words about what I cooked or saw, I get the same sense of hmmm…being inside myself. It is the same kind of state you can get when you garden….just completely in the moment. And that I why I do this so tirelessly, even when there is nothing important to note.
Onward.
